I Will Give Thanks
2 Samuel 22:50 - “Therefore, I will give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and I will sing praises unto thy name.”
Surprisingly this is the first time in the Bible that we find reference to one giving thanks. It is not surprising that the first person we have recorded in the Bible to ever say the words, “I will give thanks” is the sweet psalmist of Israel, King David. These words are also recorded in Psalm 18:49. It has been said that the psalm written in 2 Samuel 22 was David’s rough draft copy of the song and Psalm 18 was the final draft. It was a psalm of Thanksgiving from the heart of David for the LORD delivering David “out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul” (2 Samuel 22:1).
One significant difference between the psalm in 2 Samuel and the one in Psalm 18 is the fact that the opening line to the song in Psalm 18:1 is “I will love Thee, O LORD, my strength.” David’s love and thanksgiving unto the LORD is easily seen in this song!
The LORD had delivered him, why wouldn’t he express his love to God and be thankful unto Him!
We, who also through God’s grace have been delivered, should need no prompting, no worship leader at a Sunday morning church meeting to stir us up to give praise and thanksgiving unto God. We who are saved have been delivered from sin’s penalty and Hell itself! Therefore, may we give thanks unto Him, the LORD, among the heathen! May we sing praises unto His name! For the Lord Jesus Christ has given great deliverance unto us!!
