Neither Were They ThankfulRomans 1:21 “Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.” This verse proves that if a person has an unthankful heart, that unthankful heart can lead to a darkened heart. When a person’s heart becomes darkened, their life can become sinfully out of control. Starting with idolatry, then moving through the sin of women changing “the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly”, and ending with the sin of being “unmerciful” the Bible names some 25 sinful lifestyles in Romans 1: 22-31. And to think that such sinful lifestyles can all start with a heart that “knew God…” but “glorified Him not as God, neither were thankful…”. Let's think about the word “knew” in our text for a moment. The word “knew” means to learn to know. It speaks of the stage of where one is taking in knowledge about a subject, and in our text that subject is God. When a person is given a knowledge of God and then rejects that knowledge of God to the point that they glorify Him not as God and are not thankful for God they are spiritually in deep trouble. The purpose of a knowledge of God is to lead one to a relationship and fellowship with God that leads to a life that glorifies God and enjoys Him forever! Neither were they thankful. Being unthankful can lead one to a very darkened pathway of life. Dear friend, taking in what knowledge (big or small) you have about God, how thankful are you?Does your thankfulness glorify God as God?
