From “We Have” To “Thy Word”Luke 5:4-5“Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.”In Luke chapter 5 we have two scenes merging into one. In one scene you have the disciples, professional fishermen, who have toiled all night fishing and have caught nothing. In the other scene, Jesus is nearby the disciples on the shore and the people press upon Jesus to hear Him. With the disciples boat near by, Jesus uses it as a platform of sort and teaches the people. After His lesson to the people, Jesus asks Simon to, “Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.” At this moment I would love to know what Jesus’s lesson was about. Because Simon goes from “we have toiled all night, and have taken nothing” to “nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net”. The result of Simon’s faith and obedience to the Word of Christ was a miracle. We can learn a great lesson here. Often in our own strength we will do nothing but toil all night. But when our faith takes hold of His Word things change. In our own power and strength and logic “we” struggle and toil, but faith in “thy word” (the Word of God) places us in His will. The results of being in His will are always beyond anything we could ever imagine.
