Two Masters
Matthew 6:24
“No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”
We live in a day where it is easy for the best of Christians to get caught trying to be loyal to two masters. The word “masters” here is the same word for lords. How can a NT Christian try to have two Lords? It would be like trying to have two heads. While seeking to be loyal to one you would be refusing or rejecting the other. Jesus taught that while trying to love the one you would hate the other. During the early centuries (AD 155) of the church there was a pastor named Polycarp in Smyrna (now Turkey) who refused to call Caesar Lord. All he had to do was say Caesar is Lord. He wouldn’t and therefore he was burned at the stake alive. It was said that his chief captor asked him, “What harm is there in saying Lord Caesar?” Obviously to Polycarp it would greatly harm his loyalty to Jesus Christ.
Dear Christian who is Lord in your life? As far as I know there is no one these days who is threatening Christians in America to pledge allegiance to any leader or face death. But it does seem that often you find those Christians who seem to be espoused to two; Christ and the world. May our loyalty be to only One - the Lord Jesus Christ. May we serve Him and Him alone! May He be our first love! May He be our only Lord and King!
How many masters are you trying to serve?
