"THE CITY WE SEEK" "For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God." (Hebrews 11:10)Abraham left his home, his family, and everything that was cozy and comfortable to him. When God called, Abraham went. Hebrews 11:8 says that Abraham "went out, not knowing whither he went." But verse 10 here reminds us why he was willing to go. He did not know exactly where he was going, but he did know what he was looking for. He was looking for a city whose builder and maker is God, a city built on a firm foundation.Abraham traded the emotional and physical stability of his hometown of Ur for the eternal and promised foundation found in God’s will. He wanted, above all else, for his life to be built and blessed by God.The Bible closes with John the Beloved seeing a vision of a radiant city coming down from Heaven. It is the bride of the Lamb, the people of God made holy. God's work in them is complete and they are like Jesus (Romans 8:29). John notes that these walls have foundations (Revelation 21:14). This city is where we can dwell safely. This is an eternal city, designed and built by God. To every person that knows the forgiveness found in the Lord Jesus, this city is our home!Where or what is your faith resting upon today? Do you look to that which you have gained? Do you look to your government? Do you look for a good feeling? Or are you, like Abraham, living by faith and looking to God to build your life on His Word and His will each day?Friends, nothing is more solid in this old world than God’s promises. That which He said He would do, He will do. Our Lord has never reneged on a promise He made and He's NOT about to NOW! He wants us to live by faith and continually look to Him, because no one can build a city and shape a life like God can.
