The Lord Hath Need
Luke 19:29-34
“And it came to pass, when he was come nigh to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount called the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, Saying, Go ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a colt tied, whereon yet never man sat: loose him, and bring him hither. And if any man ask you, Why do ye loose him? thus shall ye say unto him, Because the Lord hath need of him. And they that were sent went their way, and found even as he had said unto them. And as they were loosing the colt, the owners thereof said unto them, Why loose ye the colt?
And they said, The Lord hath need of him.”
All four of the Gospels record this event of Jesus’s entry into Jerusalem riding a colt of a donkey. Jesus sent a couple of His disciples to fetch the beast of burden. He knew the owner of the colt would ask why they loosed the colt, so Jesus gave them an answer to give him, “Because the Lord hath need of him.”
What is this? The sovereign Lord of all, the King of kings, “hath need”? Though He was God, Christ at times chose to use people and their possessions to accomplish the Father’s will. Today it is the same.
Dear Christian is there something that you have that could be used by the Lord?
Perhaps it is a possession?
Perhaps it is your money?
Perhaps it is you?
I truly believe if the Lord has all of you, then He has all of what is yours. I wonder how the owner of the colt felt when he realized he had raised the colt that God used to fulfill the Scripture of Zechariah 9:9
“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.”
In 1896, after wrestling in his heart for nearly five years whether to pursue a lucrative career in art or be a Gospel evangelist Judson Van De Venter wrote the great hymn- I Surrender All. Most of us know the words well, but do we mean them when we sing them? The refrain,
“I surrender all,
I surrender all;
All to Thee, my blessed Savior,
I surrender all.”
