This verse is often referred to as the Protevangelium because it is the first whisper of the Gospel mentioned in the Bible. It is a shadowy reference, almost resembling a riddle of sorts, and we don't know how well people who lived before the cross understood it. But in the light of the New Testament, we can see it refers to Jesus Christ, born of a virgin (thus, the seed of the woman) crushing Satan's head with his foot, but in the process being wounded (dying on the cross).
