🌧️ The pleasant smell after rain, known as petrichor, derives from a combination of natural elements. Coined by Australian scientists in 1964, the term combines “petros” (stone) and “ichor” (the fluid of the gods) to describe this earthy fragrance.Petrichor primarily arises from geosmin, a compound produced by soil-dwelling bacteria called actinomycetes. When raindrops hit dry soil, they release geosmin into the air, creating that distinctive earthy scent. Additionally, plants secrete oils during dry periods, which accumulate in the soil and are released when it rains, further enhancing the aroma.Another contributor is ozone, produced during thunderstorms when lightning splits oxygen and nitrogen molecules. This sharp, clean scent can be detected before and after rain as it is carried down by downdrafts. Together, these elements create the refreshing smell that many find nostalgic and comforting, often associated with renewal and life.
