Crater Lake in Oregon, US is the deepest lake in America. Reaching a depth of 594 metres (1,950 feet), it is the third deepest in the world. Crater Lake formed after the collapse of the Mount Mazama volcano some 6,000 to 8,000 years ago. The volcano’s magma chamber emptied following a cataclysmic eruption leaving a cauldron-shaped hollow, called a caldera, which has filled with rainwater and snowmelt over millennia. It now acts as a great amphitheatre for cloudspotting, a large expanse of undisturbed water that reflects whatever wonders the sky has to offer. This must come as a relief for thalassophobes – those suffering from a fear of deep water – since it makes them consider the infinity of the sky above rather than that of the waters below.Stratocumulus spotted by ‘Semionk’ above Crater Lake, Oregon, US.
