The Only Hope For Sinful HumanityMatthew 14:10-11 - “And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison. And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother.”Sometimes we read a passage of Scripture and are indisputably reminded of how wicked and depraved our world is. Our verses today picture for us a young woman carrying the head of John the Baptist to her mother. Can you picture the grotesque scene? What kind of young woman carries the head of a prophet to her mother? What kind of mother asks for his head? What kind of king commands the beheading? What kind of family does all this at a birthday party? The answer to these questions is the person whose heart is greatly darkened by sin. What did John the Baptist do that upset this family so much?He confronted king Herod about his marriage to his brother’s wife and said, “It is not lawful for thee to have her.”We live in a very depraved and spiritually dark world. One does not have to read the Bible to be reminded of this. All one has to do is open their eyes to what daily goes on in our world. Three verses in Romans chapter 3 sums up our scriptural scene in Matthew 14 and the scene before us in our own world today.Romans 3:10, 18, 23 - “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:..There is no fear of God before their eyes…For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”The only hope for this sinfully, depraved, and dark world is Romans 5:8 - “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
