How Well Do You Receive Instruction?
Proverbs 19:20 - “Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.”
This is one of the many one line verses of wisdom found in the book of Proverbs. What is God saying to us in this verse?
I have seen many who I know heard the counsel of God through His Word but they did not always make the application of what they heard in their life. It is one thing to hear and another thing to receive. The word “receive” here in our verse means to take and to accept. It speaks of one who has heard the counsel and then by faith reacts upon that counsel by applying it in their life. I cannot begin to tell you how often I have known where someone heard but they did not receive.
There is a promise given to the one who hears and receives the counsel of God’s Word, he or she will “be wise in thy latter end”. The latter end speaks of going through a circumstance or trial or problem for the better. Have you ever thought at the end, “Why didn’t I listen?”
Well, truth is you heard the Godly counsel but just did not receive it. May God help us to “receive” Godly counsel when we hear it?
