What Was Saul’s Sin?
1 Samuel 15:22-23
“And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.
For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.”
King Saul had direct orders from the LORD on what to do when he went to war with the Amalekites. He disobeyed the LORD.
He rebelled against the LORD.
He showed stubbornness and idolatry.
But those were just the sub-sins of the real sin within Saul’s heart. In 1 Samuel 15:17 Samuel gives the underlying root sin of Saul. “And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel?”
There was a time when Saul was little in his own sight. The word “little” means unimportant or insignificant. Saul used to think he was nothing and God could have easily chosen someone else to be king. Now he thinks he has arrived. The root sin of his heart was pride! Pride has been the downfall of many great men (and women). The Scriptural truth supporting this is
Proverbs 16:18
“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.”
When one knowingly disobeys the LORD you can rest assured that behind that disobedience is pride.
