"OUR GREAT I AM"
I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit." (Ecclesiastes 1:14)
Think well on those 3 little words found in this verse, "all is vanity." This is not someone opining here with a below average I.Q. Neither are they the musings of one who never had a dime to his name. Rather, this is the confession of Solomon who, during his 40-year reign, had tried, tested, and tasted all that the world had to offer.
Following the death of his daddy, king David, we read about Solomon coming to the throne as Israel's third king with a prayer, and his prayer was one that heard him begging God for wisdom. To be sure, the Lord had also promised Solomon much wealth as an added blessing even though he hadn't asked for great riches. It was wisdom he sought for the sole purpose of guiding God's people (1 Kings 3:5-15)
But his worldly use of God's gift of wisdom failed and derailed him as he sailed along with the unwise addition of his many sweethearts, his majestic structures, and his man-made shrines. It goes without saying that the majority of Solomon's remaining life was one of luxury. He lusted and longed for it until he eventually lived it.
As Solomon pondered all that he had amassed, listen to the words that poured from his heart, for I sense they are uttered with a hint of pride...."I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, [I am] come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge." (Ecclesiastes 1:16) (brackets mine) Did you notice those 2 little words which I bracketed? That which filled his inner being were, I am. Folks, that's a title reserved only for Deity (Exodus 3:14).
Let's be honest with ourselves here for a moment. All of us would certainly be found sitting in the corner of the classroom wearing a dunce cap if we thought for one moment that we have the wisdom that Solomon showed and voiced from his throne back in his heyday. His knowledge and understanding with the simple things of life, coupled with his profound thoughts, were unparalleled among his contemporaries.
But Mr. Solomon, may I say very kindly, that you're no "I am!" Upon further investigation, the Great I AM who gave Solomon that wisdom and wealth has no rival with all the Riches, Royalty, and Righteousness which belongs solely to Heaven's King!
What a tragic sense of loss it must have been for Solomon to start right and then stray wrong the way he did. And for what? A little pleasure, a lot of possessions, and a lofty position.
Now, you and I don't need to go gallivanting here and there getting cozy with and eventually adding to our lives all kinds of unnecessary doodads for the gratification of our souls. Solomon already showed us the futility of that miserable undertaking saying, "Behold, all is vanity."
Take another look at our Saviour, whose name is Wonderful, in your Bible and you'll find your soul's satisfaction given by the Great I AM. For it's there, written in each of those God Breathed Words, that we'll discover the truths concerning our Lord's loving face, His lasting favor, and His longing for our fellowship.
Friends, we will NEVER find that with Jesus Christ, all is VANITY. Rather, from the very beginning of our walk to the final step of our journey, we will discover the meaning of true wisdom, wealth, and the worth of it all will be because in our great "I AM," ALL IS VICTORY!
