Closet PrayingMatthew 6:6“But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.”“When thou prayest..”our Lord assumes His followers will pray.Do you practice the principle He lays out for us in this verse?Do you have a closet for prayer, that you enter into and shut the door to the outside world, and pray to our Heavenly Father in secret?Part of the reason our Lord gives for closet praying is to keep us from being seen and heard of men. There is a point in our Lord’s sermon in the first part of Matthew 6 that warns us of doing things before men to be seen of men.Don’t give to be seen of men (vs. 1-5),don’t pray to be seen of men (vs. 6-15),and don’t fast to be seen of men (vs. 16-18). Some people just love to be seen, but when it comes to praying in a closet the whole idea is to not be seen of men. One thing I truly love about closet praying is I can pour out everything in my heart before the Lord. There is no reason that I should hold back any request, or how I feel about any request. Closet praying is a great cure for anxieties! Closet praying is a great place to practice Philippians 4:6 - “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God”So you might capitalize on Philippians 4:7 - “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”I note that our Lord says, “when thou prayest, enter into thy closet”.“Thy” prayer closet, do you have one?
