The true "Israel of God," the "spiritual Israel," is that remnant of faith within national Israel whom God has elected and reserved to himself. These understand that circumcision of the flesh avails nothing in itself, but is only an outward sign of God's special covenant with Israel. They understand that circumcision of the heart, that is the new birth, is what counts.
