Keep Your Word
Matthew 5:33, 37 -- “Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:…But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.”
The word “oaths” here means a promise or a pledge. I believe these verses and the one in James 5:12 teaches this truth; be a person of your word!
James 5:12 says, “But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation.”
Obviously there will be times that we have given someone our word or made a promise in which something happens that hinders us from keeping our word. A heartfelt apology should help here and we must remember that both you and the Lord knows if you could have kept your word. Also, it could be that you could make it up some other way or at another time.
The point I’m making is for sure it is not a very good testimony for a Christian to be someone in which others cannot trust their word. We can rest assured that every promise God ever made through Christ will come to pass!
2 Corinthians 1:20 -- “For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.”
America today, is full of people who get up to speak and make promises or change what they say like the wind. If there is anyone in America that ought to be a person of their word it ought to be the person who is a Christian.
