THE WHISKEY BOTTLE EVANGELIST
About a century ago there was a certain Christian mother who prayed without ceasing for her lost son, a decorated combat officer from World War I named Carleton E. Null (1887-1967). In the 1920's, her prayers were answered when he received Christ as his Saviour after being handed a pocket new testament. In the 1930's, Null started his own gospel ministry, which included a unique bottle floating ministry where gospel tracts would be sealed in bottles and tossed into rivers, lakes and oceans. He saw much good fruit from this ministry, and he eventually influenced another brother to start a similar work. That brother's name was George Phillips of Tocoma, Washington. Phillips became known as the Whiskey Bottle Evangelist.
Over a period of about twenty years (the 40's and 50's) Phillips managed to float out around 40,000 gospel bottles, and he received some 2,000 replies from 40 countries. Many of the replies were salvation testimonies from people who felt that God had providentially directed His gospel message to them in this most unique way. You have to admit, it would be hard to NOT feel that way after discovering a floating bottle with a gospel tract in it! And it all started with a praying mother.
