How Low Can A Nation Go?2 Kings 17:16-18 -- “And they left all the commandments of the LORD their God, and made them molten images, even two calves, and made a grove, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served Baal. And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, and used divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.” Can you imagine any people, any nation actually sacrificing children to false gods? Yet this is what we see happened when Israel turned away from the LORD God. How could something like this happen? How could any people group get so low in the depravity of sin? The answer is found in our text, they “sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the LORD”. The cause is unrighteousness in the face of God. Arrogance and pride has reached a pinnacle. Provoking the Almighty was their desire, and they accomplished their desire. Why would someone deliberately want to anger God? Proverbs 14:34 says, “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.” What we read in 2 Kings 17 and what we see going on in America is the pinnacle of pride and arrogance. It is a new level of unrighteousness. Is a new king or a new president going to make a difference? What they needed was a return to righteousness and what we need is a return to righteousness. May God help us all to see that the lives of so many children are at stake. May God help us to return to righteousness!
