His Blood
Matthew 27:24-25 “When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it. Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.”
Jesus died an innocent man, all purposed by God. The innocent and just died for the guilty.
Who was the guilty?
We could start by saying those who cried forth to take His life! But the guilt of humanity goes back further than that day. It goes back all the way to the Garden of Eden to where Adam was guilty of sin. He had disobeyed God, and the result of his disobedience plunged the whole human race into having a sinful nature (Romans 5:12). Pilate tried to wash his hands of taking the innocent blood of Jesus. There is no soap and no water hot enough to cleanse away sin.
All the people cried, “His blood be upon us, and on our children”. I read those words and think of those children. Why bring them into your sin of killing an innocent and just man?
This is a stark reminder to us all, that children suffer greatly for the sins of their parents!
But Jesus was no ordinary man. Jesus is the God-man. He is the only begotten Son of God. He was our Substitutional Lamb of God, who died and shed His blood to take away the sin of the world. Amen.
