Though Boca Raton in Florida, US is some 3,000 miles across the Atlantic from the Sahara Desert, it can still be reached by clouds of desert dust blown right across the ocean. Saharan dust is something of a mixed blessing for the people of Florida. Its tiny particles can cause allergies to flare up and summer temperatures to soar, but the dryness associated with desert-dust clouds and the strong winds that carry them thousands of miles both help suppress the tropical cyclones that can lead to the formation of hurricanes. Also, Saharan dust can scatter the sunlight to create more vivid sunrises and sunsets, like this one spotted by Raymond Popkin (Member 63,500) with patches of Altocumulus cloud and streaks of distant Cirrus, where the Sun glows a lurid yellow in the hazy evening sky.
