Hard Days And Sleepless Nights
Does my title sound familiar? Can you relate with what it suggests?
I believe Psalm 3 gives us the proof that King David had days and nights described as hard and sleepless. It was written on the occasion of the revolt and rebellion of his son Absalom.
Can you imagine what those days and nights would have been like?
Here we see David not as a king but a father. In Psalm 3 he begins his song singing about some of those experiences with these words in verse 1 and 2 - “LORD, how are they increased that trouble me! many are they that rise up against me. Many there be which say of my soul, There is no help for him in God. Selah.”
The enemy, his own son, has troubled him and mocked him saying, “There is no help for him in God”. But in verse 3 David shows us where he finds his refuge, his protection, and his encouragement to go on.
Psalms 3:3
“But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.”
He cried unto the LORD and the LORD heard him!
Psalms 3:4
“I cried unto the LORD with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill. Selah.”
Selah- here with the truth that God would hear him, David would stop and rest and meditate! The holy God of Heaven would hear him! There he could find rest!
Psalms 3:5
“I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me.”
David was granted the gift of a night of sleep and rest. In the morning he was gifted the gift of a new day. But not until “he cried unto the LORD”. It is obvious from reading the entire psalm that David knew the only thing he could do was to commit his enemies and the things that greatly troubled his heart unto the LORD. May we learn the same lesson that God is here teaching us from the life of David. May we learn to commit by faith unto the LORD those things that make for hard days and sleepless nights. And may we find rest in our faith in the LORD.
