Raising and training children in the "fear and admonition of the Lord" must be done with gentleness, love, and patience. We must discipline our children when they stray for their own good, but we should never mistreat them and "provoke them to wrath." And the lack of godly training in their youth could itself be a cause of their wrath being kindled against us later in life.
