"WHAT SHALL I DO FOR THEE?" "Now there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the LORD: and the creditor is come to take unto him my two sons to be bondmen. And Elisha said unto her, WHAT SHALL I DO FOR THEE? tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thine handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil. Then he said, Go, borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbors, even empty vessels; borrow not a few." (2 Kings 4:1-3) (caps mine)We read here about compassionate and miraculous ministry of the prophet Elisha. Amidst adversity, faithfulness is rewarded, prayers are answered, and the impossible becomes possible, illuminating God's boundless love and power. There are times when a faithful servant of God will fall into financial difficulty. It does not mean that they have been unfaithful in their calling. Often it is because God desires to increase their faith. Now there was a man who had served in the company of the prophets, but he died in debt. His widow was afraid the bill collectors would come and take her sons as slaves in payment for the debt. She asked the prophet of God, Elisha, what to do. He had nothing to give her. When Elisha was called by God, he left everything behind and used his yoke for wood and his plow oxen as a sacrifice (1 Kings 19:19-21).The man of God asked what she had left. Sometimes we only have a little for God to work with, but as all of us can testify, the Lord can do a lot with a little. If we are willing to demonstrate our faith by putting that little bit into His hands, He multiplies it. (Hey, let's not forget Jesus' feeding of the 5,000 with just 5 loaves and 2 fish.) Folks, what do you have in your house? That woman only had a pot with a little oil in it. Most of us have plenty. Will we put it in God's hands?Elisha told her to borrow as many vessels as she could from her neighbors. When we go to God's market where He supplies our needs, let's make sure we take a big basket with us. The widow poured what little oil she had left, and it kept coming. It continued to flow until every last vessel in the whole neighborhood was full. If she had a million more vessels, I believe they would have all been full as well. The flow of God's provision stops when our faith no longer pleads. When God promises to supply and fill all our needs from Heaven's bounty, we will wish we had prepared more vessels for Him to fill. Friends, those words still cry out to us today, "WHAT SHALL I DO FOR THEE?"
