"THIS DAY IS A DAY OF GOOD TIDINGS." "And when these lepers came to the uttermost part of the camp, they went into one tent, and did eat and drink, and carried thence silver, and gold, and raiment, and went and hid it; and came again, and entered into another tent, and carried thence also, and went and hid it.Then they said one to another, We do not well: this day is a day of good tidings, and we hold our peace: if we tarry till the morning light, some mischief will come upon us: now therefore come, that we may go and tell the king's household." (2 Kings 7:8-9)The Syrians had laid siege to Samaria, the capital of Israel. The people inside the city were slowly starving to death. The famine had so devastated the land, that we read earlier of a woman who had even boiled her own son for a meal and shared it with another (2 Kings 6:26-29).Then the king of Israel became furious against the LORD and His prophet and determined to kill Elisha (6:31-33). When the king arrived at the room of the prophet Elisha, Elisha prophesied that the next day there would be an abundance of food (7:1-2).Now we happen upon that exciting story in verse 3 about a quartet of lepers who decided to go out to the Syrian's camp. They knew that either way they were going to die, yet by going to the camp, they just might find grace and mercy (v. 4). When they arrived, the army was gone, but all their goods were still there. They began to raid the place going from tent to tent, hiding the goods, until their conscience got the best of them. They knew they needed to tell the good news to the starving people of Samaria (vs. 7-8).You know folks, in many ways, we're a lot like those poor famished lepers when we came to Christ, our Bread from Heaven. We were living a miserable life starving for the Truth. Ah, but we found the answer to all our needs when we came in to our Saviour's Camp and trusted the Lord Jesus. But then, as the years rolled by, we slowly began stashing away that Truth. How did we do that? We did that by simply hiding His Message from others which was once the daily conversation upon our lips.Oh, may the Spirit of God prick our conscience and convict our hearts in such a way that would cause us to see again the need of others who are holed up without Christ living in that City of Condemnation. Yes, the perishing in need of rescuing are on every side, slowly dying, waiting for you and I to tell them the Good News that Jesus saves and that that old thief of belief, the devil, has been surely thrashed and soundly defeated!Friends, this day is a day of good tidings. Let us run at once and tell someone whereby they too may freely, like we did, and like those 4 lepers of old did, feed on the Grace and Mercy of Almighty God!
