Up above the streets and houses, Rainbow climbing high. Everyone can see it smiling, Over the sky.’ From the theme tune to British children’s television series Rainbow (1972-1992), performed by the band Telltale.A circumzenithal arc spotted over Buzancy, France by Andy Forsey (Member 19,754). Though this optical effect looks like an upside-down rainbow, it has nothing to do with rain and forms in a different part of the sky – directly above, rather than on the horizon. Circumzenithal arcs appear as sunlight refracts through tiny hexagonal-plate-shaped ice crystals, like the ones in these Cirrus clouds, which are high enough in the sky for everyone to see them smiling.
