What Was Jesus Thinking?
You ever wonder what Jesus thought about when he was alone, walking the dusty roads of Galilee? Or in the back of the boat after a long day of ministry? Or when he left the disciples and went off by himself? What heavy thoughts occupied his mind during those moments?
We naturally assume Jesus was pondering the large issues of mankind and human sinfulness and the desperate need of salvation. But that isn’t the case at all. Jesus was constantly thinking about his Father. The focus of his thoughts; the food for his soul; the yearning of his heart was always God.
Sunday morning many of us will gather with fellow-believers because we too are concerned about God. The appeal of church isn’t entertainment, or an existential religious experience. It’s because we are hungry for news about God, knowledge about God, and of course, to worship him in the splendor of his Holiness.
But here’s something else. We yearn for God after the fashion of Jesus, but at the same time God yearns for us. For you. Not that he needs anything for us. He’s all-sufficient. Complete in Himself. Nevertheless He wants us. He created us for fellowship and mutual enjoyment. When Adam sinned, he didn’t cry, “O God, where art thou?” It was God who cried, “Adam, where are you…”
So, on the Lord’s Day, as we sing the hymns and study the Scriptures and give and pray, we are looking hard in God’s direction. We only have an hour. So let’s not waste any of it in daydreaming or idleness of soul or looking around at everyone else. Let’s feast our souls on God…like Jesus did when he was here.
