"OUR SAVIOUR'S ONE TIME SACRIFICE."
"And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
This shall be the law of the leper in the day of his cleansing: He shall be brought unto the priest:
And the priest shall go forth out of the camp; and the priest shall look, and, behold, if the plague of leprosy be healed in the leper;
Then shall the priest command to take for him that is to be cleansed two birds alive and clean, and cedar wood, and scarlet, and hyssop:" (Leviticus 14:1-4)
Years ago, I heard a man say that the 13th and 14th chapters of Leviticus is rather a boring read. Well, here says that nothing in the Word of God is boring. To be sure, those 2 chapters can be some rough sledding as one glides along, but let's hang on and enjoy the ride and see what the Lord has in store for us here.
In this chapter we find the cleansing ceremony that had to be performed before a healed leper could return back to his or her usual activities. This sacrifice was repeated again and again for the many who had been stricken with leprosy.
This sacrifice involved a bird to be killed in an earthen vessel over running water. The blood of that bird was then applied to a second, living bird, as well as to cedar wood, scarlet fabric, and hyssop. The priest then sprinkled some of the blood onto the person who was healed from leprosy. The living bird was freed and let go, and the blood spread from its wings as it flew over the land.
Now, here we see a clear comparison between the cleansing ceremony of a leper and Jesus Christ’s death on the Cross, which served as the Supreme sacrifice for sin. Jesus is Heaven's sacrifice just as the bird that died in the earthen vessel was an earthly sacrifice.
The sacrificed bird remained clean because of the running water, but Jesus, who knew no sin, was made sin for us. The blood and water were then applied to the living bird, in the same way the sinner’s heart must be covered by Jesus’ blood, for without His blood being shed there is no remission of sin (Hebrews 9:22).
Therefore, without Christ's blood be shed, there would be no redemption and no forgiveness of sins (Colossians 1:14). Are you enjoying our ride so far? Like that one fella in that TV commercial says, "But wait, there's more.
The cedar wood is a picture of the wooden cross Jesus was sacrificed on. Many historians believe that the cross was probably made of cedar, as few other kinds of trees were available in Israel.
The hyssop is also connected to the sacrifice of Jesus for we read that He was offered a drink from a hyssop branch while on the Cross (John 19:29). We find what king David wrote in Psalm 51:7, “purge me with hyssop,” meaning that he was as diseased as a leper and in need of cleansing following his sin with Bathsheba.
Finally, after the cleansing ceremony with the birds, the leper was to wash his clothes and shave off all of his hair. He was starting over again as if he were a newborn baby. And that right there is a INDEED a clear picture of being born again.
Friends, Praise the Lord for we now have a new set of clothes we wear. It's the righteousness of Christ. We no longer wear those old GUILT-RIDDEN GRAVE clothes; for we have been adorned with our new GOD'S REDEEMING GRACE clothes which Jesus Christ provided as Heaven's one time never to be repeated sacrifice for our sins!
