"DO YOU HAVE AN APPETITE FOR THE WILL OF GOD?"
"Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work." (John 4:34)
We read in v.4 of this chapter, which is filled with much truth, where Jesus "must needs go through Samaria." There He would speak with a woman at Jacob's well who was indeed a soul that was in great need.
From that conversation, we learn that this woman, who had said "I DO" five different times in the past, was now shacking up with a fella who wasn't even her husband.
Well, when the disciples returned from the city after fetching some meat, Jesus told them that His meat came from obeying and doing the will of God. That was His real food, and He intended to keep feeding on it till He finished the work He came to do.
Now folks, what strengthens you? What sustains you? What satisfies you? When the Lord Jesus passed up a lunch break that long ago day, He revealed to His disciples that His driving purpose was to do the will of His Heavenly Father.
In so many words, Jesus said, "My meat, my food, my sustenance comes from doing the will of God and finishing that work He sent me to do." Notice that it does not satisfy Jesus’ appetite to simply SEARCH the will of God or to STUDY it. Our Saviour found His fulfillment in actively STAYING in the good work of God wherever He went with whoever He met.
In Acts 10:38, Peter witnesses to Cornelius about Christ saying, "How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him."
Too often we think of Christianity as a set of beliefs only. But following Christ invariably means hungering to know the will of God and being satisfied when we are engaged in it. Nothing else will ever substitute for active obedience.
But Jesus also took it a step further. His statement includes completion of the work that God has for Him to do. Jesus was not just trying to soothe His conscience or make a show of obedience. His satisfaction only came in the achievement of God’s purpose for Him while here on Earth.
Friends, what about you and me? Is our meat to do our Heavenly Father’s will? Are we actively seeking to proclaim our Christian faith in private and public? What a delight it is to have that Holy Appetite to finish the great purpose for which God has called each of us to do.
