"THE FOLLY OF IDOLATRY."
"Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy, and for thy truth's sake.
Wherefore should the heathen say, Where is now their God?
But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.
Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men's hands.
They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not:
They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not:
They have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat." (Psalm 115:1-8)
This beautiful Psalm, which is one of my favorites, shows the folly of idolatry, and encourages our unwavering trust in God. It highlights the blessings that await those who choose to fear not but walk in the way of truth.
Those who made their idols were just like them...DEAD! But our God in Heaven, whom we worship, is ALIVE! Their idols are visible and have no power, but our God is invisible and has all power! Power belongs to God. "God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God." (Psalm 62:11)
God was faithful to Israel, though the Israelites were often unfaithful to Him. Their sins of idolatry brought God's punishment upon them, causing their pagan neighbors to mock them with accusations and ridicule them with allegations that their God was unable to help them and was nowhere to be found (v. 2).
Ah, but the Israelites response was that their God in Glory is alive and in full control and does what He pleases (v.3).
By contrast, the pagan gods were useless, and the reason they were useless is because they were lifeless! Those who trusted in them achieved nothing. The idols of men say nothing, see nothing, hear nothing, smell nothing, feel nothing, walk nowhere, and never make a sound (vs. 4-8).
Oh, what a tragedy it is today to see how many people lust for those idols that shine but for a season while the future of their eternal soul hangs in the balance.
Folks, we have many things we call ours, which if we're not careful, can quickly become an idol. Our job or career. Our home, our cars, or our bank account. Our education, our talents, and that level of success we've achieved in our chosen field. Why then, would we idolize those things or anything else I didn't mention, when it was the Lord alone Who bestowed them upon us because He loves us dearly?
Well, is it your choice to be among the walking dead these days pursuing those lifeless idols; or do you choose to be alive in Christ ever praising Him alone for His blessings and for His mercy and His truth?
Friends, that second choice brings glory to His Name (v.1).
