"NO GREATER LOVE.'"
"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." (John 15:13)
Even before the foundation of the world, Calvary was the decision of Heaven to showcase that GREATER LOVE. Calvary then, is indeed the epitome of GREATER LOVE. How else would this Friend that sticketh closer than a brother, show His love for His friends, but to voluntarily lay down His life for them?
The religious people on earth during those days, even though their hatred for Jesus was seen time and time again, did not take the life of Christ from Him. Neither the blood thirsty puppet rulers on their thrones, nor the curious onlookers, who taunted and chanted their blasphemous accusations at the foot of the cross that day, met together and rounded up a jury who decided that our Saviour should die. Not even the spear of a Roman soldier, which was plunged into the side of the Man on the middle cross, spelled the end for the Lord of Lords and King of Kings. No human being of God's creation came up with the idea to take the Lamb of God's life from Him. If not any of these, then who?
The answer is given in John 10:18. For it's there we read the Words of the One Whose heart beat with that GREATER LOVE saying, "No man taketh it from me, but I LAY IT DOWN OF MYSELF. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father." (caps mine)
How then can we, as Christ-like followers, show GREATER LOVE? Does it mean we are to die for others? Would the giving of our earthly life offer eternal life to someone else? Would such a sacrifice bring about everlasting hope for trusting multitudes?
We need not LAY DOWN our lives for someone else's salvation because that's already been done!! What we need to do is LIFT UP the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ to those who are lost so that they too may know this GREATER LOVE.
As heirs and joint heirs with Christ, we can also show, to some extent, GREATER LOVE to the members of our Spiritual Family by building each other up in the Lord instead of bringing each other down.
You know, you'll always see those who have experienced this GREATER LOVE, daily laying down their lives with uplifting words that will heal and unselfish works that will help their brothers and sisters in Christ who may be down with a broken heart.
John, that disciple whom Jesus loved, said it best when he wrote, "Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the BRETHREN." (1 John 3:16) (caps mine again)
Friends, let's lay down our lives for someone today by lifting up Jesus Christ.
