Despisers Of Those That Are Good? 2 Timothy 3:1-3 “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,…” This text describes “the last days” before our Lord’s return and gives us a list of the characteristics of these days. And there are two more verses following! “Perilous” describes them perfectly. Hard to take, bear, approach; troublesome; dangerous; harsh; fierce; and savage is the meaning of perilous. The characteristic listed that is catching my thoughts today is “despisers of those that are good”. This description fits well with what we see presently going on in America. We see hatred and hostility towards goodness and good men. Why would anyone be opposed to good people doing good things? Acts 10:38 speaks of how Jesus “went about doing good… for God was with Him”. Here is the truth that pricks those that oppose “those that are good”. The good Jesus did while here on Earth helped to get Him crucified. Any goodness that is done in the name of Jesus these days will be despised by some. It is the day we live in. It is a mark of how perilous these days have become. Isaiah in chapter 5 and verse 20 pronounced a “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil…” That day has arrived. Discouraging and disturbing indeed! May we who follow Jesus remember the promise of 1 John 4:4 “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”
