Mark 9:35 - And He sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.
A Story Of Humility
James A. Garfield was the twentieth president of the United States. Because he was president of the United States, the people were very conscious of his presence when he came to church. Especially was the pastor proud of him. He would refer to him from the pulpit as “President James A. Garfield.”
One day the president came to see his pastor and said, “Pastor, I know on the outside and before the world I am the president of the United States. But in the church I am just plain James A. Garfield.” This is a beautiful story of humility! It illustrates the New Testament definition of greatness in a simple way. The humility of this famous and powerful man is a tribute not only to him, but also to his Savior.
