Elon Musk's social platform X has modified its user guide and officially opened up the upload of adult video content. As long as adult nudity or sexual behavior is produced and disseminated with the consent of both parties, users can share it. The new policy also applies to adult images, comics or 18+ anime generated by artificial intelligence (AI). However, X still restricts children and adult users who choose not to watch from viewing adult content.
Adult content and nude images have existed on X's predecessor Twitter for many years, and have never been explicitly banned before Musk took over at the end of 2022. This practice is in sharp contrast to other social platforms, such as Meta's Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube.
X recently updated its policy, pointing out that "sexual performance, whether visual or written, can be a legitimate form of artistic expression."
Although the new policy allows limited adult content, X still requires it to be clearly marked and is not allowed to appear in overly conspicuous locations such as user profile pictures and covers. Accounts that frequently upload such content need to adjust the relevant settings so that all photos and videos will be warned, allowing other users to choose whether to watch them.
X still restricts children and adult users who choose not to watch adult content from viewing it, and also prohibits content that promotes exploitation, non-consensual, objectification, sexualization or harm to minors, and obscene behavior.
The X security team wrote that the new policy will "make our rules clearer and enforcement in these areas more transparent."
