"SAVED BY A SPIDER""For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil. And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good?"—1 Peter 3:12-13You ever feel vulnerable? Like there's a target painted on your back? People picking on you for whatever? Welcome to the world of Felix of Nola. His father died when he was a young man, and he liquidated his inheritance, gave it all to the poor, and entered the ministry. His mentor got himself noticed by the Roman authorities who sent soldiers to kill them both. Felix managed to help his ailing "father in the faith" to a remote cave, and as soon as they got inside a spider wove a glistening web over the entrance. The soldiers noticed the web, assumed no one was in that cave, and raced on…futilely, I might add. Some call it a myth, a legend from the 2nd century, and perhaps it is…but on other hand, it is entirely possible. With God all things are possible. According to the Biblical record, He has stopped the mouths of lions, dropped 100 lb hailstones with deadly accuracy on Philistines, swallowed people with earthquakes, dammed rivers with his little finger, toppled city walls, caused armies to go blind, and on and on the record goes. In light of all that, is it unreasonable to think He might employ the services of a random spider or two? I like to think of my vulnerability this way: No one can touch me without God's permission. To get to me, you have to though God. And in my book, that's pretty safe.
