"SPREAD IT BEFORE THE LORD."
"And Hezekiah received the letter of the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezekiah went up into the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD." (2 Kings 19:14)
The Assyrian army, under their new king Sennacherib, was heading for Jerusalem. When king Hezekiah heard this news, he quickly prepared the defenses by cutting off all water supply outside the city that might aid the enemy forces. Over there in 2 Chronicles 32:6-8, we read where Hezekiah encouraged his troops to trust in God and by those words, the people were strengthened for a fight.
Meanwhile, as Sennacherib himself was busy dilly-dallying around in Lachish fighting with the people there, he sent some of his servants to Jerusalem with a message. The message was filled with all kinds of snide remarks.
In 2 Chron. 32:10-19, we hear in so many words what ole Sennacherib was saying, "Do you really think you can stand up against me and what I plan to do? Hezekiah is misleading you people into thinking your God will rescue you from me. Look at what I and my fathers have done to other people of the earth. Who was ever able to stand up against me and what god was able to resist my power? Don't let Hezekiah deceive you or persuade you and above all don't believe him. Remember no other kingdom or nation has been delivered from my hand. How much less then shall your God be able to deliver you?"
These servants of Sennacherib continued with words of railing, mocking, and scorning against the LORD God of Israel. They even spoke in the Jews speech to the people who had gathered on the city walls in an attempt to frighten them in hopes to make it easier to capture the city.
Now I don't know about you, but those words of Sennacherib stick in my craw like a double cheeseburger after midnight. Who does this little midget of Assyria think he is to stand up against the Mighty Ruler of Heaven and Earth? But in verse 20 of 2 Chron.32, Hezekiah and Isaiah had a prayer meeting and that's where those words of 2 Kings 19:14 come into play, "spread it before the LORD."
How many times has the Devil tried to back us into a corner with similar words like that of Sennacherib, "Who is able to deliver you from me? He points to that stack of bills. He worries us with what the Doctor's report might be. He wants us to get all bent out of shape over health care, taxes, and gas prices. He likes us to fret about how much money we don't have. Your Jesus, he says, has deceived you. He will never meet your needs even though He says He's able to. God doesn't care about you. He has bigger fish to fry."
Do you know how that whole list of threats against the people and the blasphemies against God which Sennacherib mouthed off about and how it backfired on him and his army of Assyria? Read the rest of the story in 2 Kings 19:35-37 where 185,000 were killed. Even Sennacherib himself met with death by the hands of his 2 sons. So shall it be for Satan and his thugs one day who from the very beginning have mocked and blasphemed God and His people.
Friends, what do we do in times like that when our arch enemy, be it a Sennacherib or Satan himself, pokes fun at us for trusting God? We are to do exactly what Hezekiah did! We, "spread it before the LORD."
