"FROM SORROW TO JOY. ""And Sarah said, God hath made me to laugh, so that all that hear will laugh with me." (Genesis 21:6)We see in this marvelous account how God's promises interweave with human action, resulting in blessings of joy even amid sorrow. It underscores God's promises and provision, and how His perfect plan extends beyond immediate circumstances to future generations. We learn that Sarah did not have an easy life. Her husband Abraham traveled as a nomad, following God’s leadership, until his death. She therefore had no permanent place, plot, or palace where she could make a home and call it her own.More difficult still, she had been unable to have children with her husband Abraham. After years and years of waiting, hoping, and praying, they were still a barren couple. Finally, as she and her husband became advanced in their years, God did appear and promised Abraham that Sarah would conceive and bare him a son.By this time, and especially at this age, the idea was so unthinkable to Sarah that she laughed in unbelief at the promise of the Lord when it was delivered (Genesis 18:9-15). Yet, her settled conviction became one of trust in the Lord and in His promise: Hebrews 11:11 tells us, "Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised."When God, in His own good timing, does bless her to conceive, Sarah’s testimony is a sweet one where she proclaims at Isaac's birth, “God hath made me to laugh.” The laugh of unbelief had been turned into a laugh of overflowing, uncontainable joy. She determines that she will, in fact, tell others of her great deliverance so that they can rejoice with her.Let Sarah’s precious testimony be a reminder to us of the faithfulness of God that, in His own good time, He turns our sorrow and unbelief into a lasting joy that marvels at the mercy and goodness of God.Friends, you may be temporarily traveling on that street of sorrow today, but take heart, for the Lord Jesus has already paved the road of rejoicing for His children who trust in His Word.
