"BUT PRAYER WAS MADE."
"Peter therefore was kept in prison: BUT PRAYER WAS MADE without ceasing of the church unto God for him." (Acts 12:5)
Chapter 12 provides a marvelous display of God's power and protection triumphing over human tyranny. Even in the face of persecution and seemingly insurmountable odds, God is in control, providing deliverance and ensuring justice. The fervent prayers of the believers underscore the importance of prayer.
We often see in the Scriptures that when pain, persecution, and pressures occur in the life of a Child of God, it drives them to prayer. And as Christians, prayer should never be our last resort, but rather, our first response.
As the chapter unfolds here, James is beheaded by Herod and Peter is awaiting his execution in prison. Yet, that 5th verse says, "but prayer was made." This is the turning point of the entire chapter.
Although it begins with Herod incensed with wrath, the chapter ends with the Gospel increasing in wonder. In verse 24 we read that thrilling account, “But the word of God grew and multiplied." Well Amen!
In the end, Jesus’ Name, not Herod’s, was glorified through these events. It is at the point of prayer that a tremendous shift in direction occurs.
Notice the four notable elements of this pivotal prayer:
First, it was without ceasing. Jesus Himself tells us in so many words that we will continue receiving and finding as we continue asking and seeking (Matthew 7:7).
Second, the prayer was made by the Church. If we do not pray for one another in the body of Christ, who will pray for us? Will those that are trying to censor Christianity hold prayer meetings for us? I think not!
Third, this prayer was made unto God. Not all prayer is to the one true and living God and in the Name of Christ. Jesus says, “No man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6).
Fourth, the prayer was made for Peter. Personal, intercessory prayer is Christ’s command to His Church. As the Bible teaches us, we are to, “Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body." (Hebrews 13:3).
Friends, does this kind of prayer characterize your time spent alone with God? You can rest assured that it will be the turning point in the midst of your fears, your frailty, and your frustrations."
