LORD, Help Me!Psalms 40:11-13 - “Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O LORD: let thy lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve me. For innumerable evils have compassed me about: mine iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of mine head: therefore my heart faileth me. Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me: O LORD, make haste to help me.”It is so very easy to see the faults of others. What about seeing our own faults? When is the last time you looked in the mirror of God’s Word, and saw your own sins? Note in our text how David cries unto God, “mine iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up”. This is the prayer of a man broken over his own sins! He feels the weight of conviction upon his own soul! He feels unworthy to look up to God! He needs and is looking for deliverance and he looks in the right direction. He looks to the LORD for his deliverance and help. When David committed the sin of adultery with Bathsheba he admitted his own guilt! He wrote about that guilt and conviction in Psalms 51:2-4 - “Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight.” Again in this psalm we see not only his acknowledgment of his own sin, but we see him looking to the LORD for forgiveness, deliverance, and help. Only Jesus Christ can deliver and help us overcome sin! But first we must see and acknowledge our own sin.
