How Well Are You Keeping Your Heart?Proverbs 4:23 -- “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” In verses like this one the Bible is not speaking of the mass of muscle that pumps blood throughout our body. It is speaking of how the heart is the seat of our emotions, our inner person of mind, will, soul, and being. It is the place where God dwells or self dwells, and for some people where Satan dwells. Jesus said in Mark 7:21-22 -- “For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:” According to Jesus evil can proceed from one’s heart. The Bible says in Romans 10:9-10, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” Our heart is where the salvation of God enters and works. The word “keep” is a military term that means to watch, guard, observe, be blockaded. The word “diligence” means a place of confinement or a guard post. We are being warned to watch with careful preciseness what goes in and out of our heart. We desire for God, through His salvation to be the only One who dwells or reigns therein. May He not only dwell and reign there but may He work freely therein for us to be loyal and true followers of Jesus Christ. Guard your heart with all diligence!
