"EVEN AS CHRIST WALKED."
"For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.
For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:" (1 Peter 2:20-21)
Christians love to talk about walking with Christ. But Peter makes it clear in verse 21 that we cannot expect to walk with a suffering, rejected Saviour without experiencing suffering and rejection ourselves. Someone once asked the question, "Can we follow the Saviour far, and have no wound or scar?"
There is nothing noble in suffering as an end in itself. As Peter pointed out in the verse 20, "For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently?" However, he goes on and answers that question, "...but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God."
The possibility of not suffering while walking with our Saviour is not even an option. Why? Because the next verse states, "For even hereunto were you called." When we answered the call of service to Christ, it was not only the call to salvation, but also the call to suffering for the sake of our Saviour.
Jesus assured us when He said, “Blessed are ye, when (not if) men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. (Matthew 5:11) Paul reminds us, “For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake.” (Philippians 1:29)
Friends, those who desire to walk in the footprints of Jesus do not travel along in love with a luxurious lifestyles and selfish ambitions. Their journey is one where they continue living by faith with an uncompromising stand for the Glory of God and patiently endure the suffering for His sake.
