Though I be nothing."
"I am become a fool in glorying; ye have compelled me: for I ought to have been commended of you: for in nothing am I behind the very chiefest apostles, though I be nothing." (2 Corinthians 12:11)
"Though I be nothing" was Paul’s estimate of himself. He wrote that he was less than the least of all saints, as well as the chief of sinners. The more we know of ourselves and the more we know about Jesus Christ, the more shall we be humbled in the dirt before God; and the lower we will bow before Him in prayer.
People want to count for something during their life on Earth. Come heck or high water. they want to feel important. Now what that boils down to is their pride. but when unattained, it often leads to an existence of misery and bitterness for years on end.
On the flip side of that coin is the Christian who is willing to be nothing, that Christ may be all in all. If we daily felt that we are nothing, how many mortifications of the flesh we would be spared, and what admiring thanksgivings of the grace and mercy of God would fill our soul.
Mark it down, apart from Christ we were less than nothing, but in Christ we are more than conquerors. We were empty, but He filled us. We were naked, but He clothed us. We were weak, but He strengthened us. We were wandering, but He found us. We were lowly, but He lifted us. We were ruined, but He redeemed us. Yes, we were sinners, but He saved us and made us saints of the living God.
Friends, all we are is by Christ, all we have is from Christ, and all we shall ever be, is because of Christ in us, the Hope of Glory. Therefore, let us be ever so careful to think too highly of ourselves, or feel that we deserve much more than we have received from God. If you forget everything I wrote thus far, remember this: Humble souls before God are Honored souls by God.
