LIFT THE ANCHORI once heard of two men who, in a state of intoxication, set out in the night to cross a lake in an open boat. They rowed and rowed until the gray light of dawn began to open upon them. When, to their astonishment, they found that they had not moved only three feet. In the stupidity of their drunkenness, they had neglected to lift the anchor before they began! So it is with many and their endeavors to live the Christian life. They gladly listen to preachers; the more earnest the sermon, the more they are delighted. They converse with Christians about spiritual things and consider themselves “spiritual.”However, they never seem to grow in the things of the Lord. There seems to be something missing in their life. They never get involved, and faithfulness to service to the Lord and attendance at church always seem to be a battle to them. Why? Because deep down, their hearts are anchored to some hidden thing, and they never lift the “anchor” to be saved. There is a righteousness of their own which they will not part with, not even for the spotless robe which Jesus would bestow upon them. There is a secret chamber in their souls, and they are determined that Christ shall not have the key. Also, there is a darling lust they are resolved still to gratify. They hang back and are ALMOST persuaded to be saved but perhaps will die lost.
