"SAFE UNDER THE SHADOW OF HIS WINGS" "How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings." (Psalm 36:7)When David said, “the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings,” many believe he was referring to the wings of the cherubim over the ark. That is biblically correct, but may I also suggest that David was using a picture of the protective care of a mother bird over her young to describe how God covers us.You'll recall that Jesus used this same picture Himself in Matthew 23:37. "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!"Some time ago I was reading about the 1988 forest fire in Yellowstone National Park. The forest rangers began their hike up a mountain to inspect the inferno’s damage. One ranger found a bird that was literally petrified in ashes, laying on the ground at the base of a tree.Somewhat sickened by that sight, he knocked the bird over with a stick. As he struck it, three tiny little chicks scurried from under their dead mother’s wings. That loving mother had been keenly aware of impending disaster carried her offspring to the base of the tree and gathered them under her wings. She could have flown to safety but had refused to abandon her babies. When the blaze had arrived and the heat had scorched her body, but that mama bird had remained steadfast. She had been willing to die, but those under the cover of her wings had lived.Let us gaze long and lovingly at that picture the Holy Spirit painted of you, and I sheltered beneath God's wings. His mercy, His might and His loving-kindness which David remarks here is "excellent." Psalm 148:13 instructs us to cry out, "Let them praise the name of the LORD: for his name alone is excellent; his glory is above the earth and heaven." Oh how rich we are when we have that excellent protection of His for ourselves and indeed how poor one is without it.Friends, God spreads His wings, strong and yet tender, where beneath any and all can gather themselves and nestle with the Almighty. And how can one do that? By the simple process of fleeing by faith unto Jesus Christ. Millions have found that redemptive rest there in His "It is finished" work! Have you put your trust under the shadow of His wings?
