The High Cost Of Discipleship
Luke 14:33 - “So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.”
Our Lord let all of us know in this text that the cost of being His disciple is high.
It must be considered that not everyone will understand when one forsakes all to follow Christ and be His disciple. In this text Christ warned about setting out to build a tower (Luke 14:28-30) but not first considering whether he had sufficient funding to finish the job. Likewise He warned about a king going to war (Luke 14:31, 32) and not first consulting whether he has sufficient men to win or even make peace. Christ started out this passage saying to the multitude that was following Him in Luke 14:26 - “If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.”
These are very strange and strong words. What do they say to us?
They simply say that the cost to true discipleship of our Lord is very high. I know many who follow Christ who have a spouse and/or children and/or a parent who do not understand why they are so “fanatical about it”.
“This is the language of exaggerated contrast but it must not be watered down until the point is gone.”
Jesus said in Luke 14:27 - “And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.”
Are you a disciple of Christ? What is it costing you to follow Christ and be His disciple? What cross are you bearing?
