Let murder, fraud, lying, or idolatry be presented in their undisguised turpitude (extreme depravity), and few of good education and correct morals will be taken captive by him. But, he conceals the hook in a goodly bait and is like a skillful angler.Satan knows how to use that part of the world which is best suited to our taste and most likely to decoy. For one, he has a golden bait; for another, pleasure, for a third, worldly consequence and honour. His line is thrown out in every place — in the place of business, in our families, studies, at our tables, and on our pillows. Too many have fallen to his luring casts.THE TEMPTER KNOWSThe devil does not know the hearts of men, but he may feel their pulse, know their temper, and so accordingly can apply himself.As the farmer knows what seed is proper to sow in such soil, Satan, finding out the temper, knows what temptation is proper to sow in a particular heart. He knows how the tide of a man’s constitution runs and how the wind of temptation blows. Satan tempts the ambitious man with a crown, the lustful man with beauty, and the covetous man with money. He provides just the right temptation that attracts and snags the sinner.
