To Be Great You Must Learn To Serve
Matthew 20:26-28 - “But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.”
These words of our Lord came partly in response to a request that the mother of Zebedee's children had asked the Lord, “Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom.”
The mother of James and John had high hopes for her sons. Any Christian mother would want the best for her sons. But her request wasn’t necessarily in the power of Jesus to give. Such a request would rest in the power of the Father.
As Jesus says in Matthew 20:23, “…it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.”
Their request upset the other ten (v. 24). Perhaps they were upset because they didn’t think of it before them. Think about it, only two sides next to our Lord would be available. But Jesus quickly brought them together and let them all know such a privilege would hinge on how they reacted to being God’s servants.
The greatest is the one who has learned to serve others.
Obviously this was a divine character trait of Christ that the disciples had not yet mastered. And I would say it is also one that many of us, as Christians today, struggle with as well. Human nature and selfishness cries do something for me. “I deserve to be served.” “You owe me this privilege.” All these type attitudes are from our flesh and are of the world.
If you want to be great in God’s eyes then learn to serve with the right motives.
