"The Greatest Story"
The story of Jesus is an incredible drama featuring a man of divine character exhibiting unmistakable proofs of Godhood. And what did we do with him? Leading authorities decided he was a menace so they had him arrested, publicly flogged, hanged on a common gallows, and good riddance to a public nuisance.
All this was not very humane, especially if he was a harmless country preacher. On the other hand, if the church is right, it was more inhumane still—for the man we hanged on the cross was Almighty God Himself.
That’s the bare outline of the story. The tale of a time when God was the underdog and the men He created broke Him and killed Him. Is it possible that this terrifying drama, in which God is both hero and victim, could ever grow dull? And if this story is dull, what in the world would we call exciting? The people who hanged Jesus never accused Him of being a bore—on the contrary, they considered him a dangerous firebrand, and in the name of peace and quiet they did away with God.
“On the third day, He rose again!”
It was in death that He proved to be even more powerful and more dangerous than they ever dreamed! When He rose from the grave, it was their worst nightmare come true, because it was incontrovertible proof that He was God; and if He was God, then they were guilty of the most monstrous injustice ever committed in human history.
You can call this story shocking; you can call it devastating; you can call it anything you’d like—but you can’t call it dull. And if you can drag yourself out of bed Sunday morning and make your way to a house of worship, you can hear it all over again in all its heart-stopping urgency. Christ the Lord is risen, and because he lives, we fear the grave no longer! No wonder they call it the greatest story ever told!
