"Christ and My Sin"
I challenged some folks to imagine the horror Jesus felt when the sins of the whole world were dumped on him. We think of the crucifixion in terms of the physical torture he endured, but consider this: Jesus was pure and sinless and innocent in the extreme. So what was it like to be plunged into a cesspool of other people’s sins?
The brainstorming produced some pretty graphic images—it’s like…being covered with open sores and plunged into a pit of human excrement writhing with spiders and snakes, and as you’re sinking you cry out for help and the face of your father appears, the one who can save you, and he turns away in revulsion.
The point being—to the holy one sin is utterly repulsive, it’s an abomination. It is the essence of all that is disgusting and vile and corrupt. It is an absolute offense to the person and nature of God—to the degree that he absolutely cannot tolerate its presence even momentarily. Your sin affects God like that. Your lie. Your lust. Your gossip. Your mistreatment of your parents. Your apathy. These things are hideously revolting to God. Even the good things you do—when they’re tainted by pride become nauseating to God.
Maybe this will help you stop sinning. Maybe this will help you when you think of the crucifixion. Maybe it will heighten your level of appreciation the next time you partake of the Lord’s Table. Your sins are not mere mistakes, personality quirks, or petty offenses. They are infinitely more repugnant than human language or imagery can convey.
Which also sheds a whole new light on the magnitude of the love that propelled Christ to the cross.
