Who Cares What They Say? God Says!
"I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me.
I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set themselves against me round about." (Psalm 3:5-6)
As you study through the Book of Psalms, I would urge you to read that entire particular Psalm. Most of them are quite short and can be read in a few minutes. Then mediate on it and find a specific thought which you can apply to your life which will enable you grow in grace.
David wrote the psalm after his long-haired son Absalom rose up in rebellion against him and seized the throne of Israel (2 Samuel 15:1-29). In much distress David fled Jerusalem, but he still trusted in God.
Absalom’s rebellion appears to be so successful that many people think David has no chance of escape. He seems to have little hope of saving his life (vs.1-2).
But David’s faith in God is unshakable. He lies down at night knowing that God hears his prayers and protects him; he wakes in the morning with renewed confidence (vs. 3-6). The dangers that face him only increase his trust in God; he expects nothing less than total victory (vs. 7-8).
We see here right from the get-go where David cried out to God when he found the number of his enemies was increasing. He heard that people were saying that God would not save him. Then he made this declaration. His shield was like none other. It was the LORD who protected him. The LORD was David's glory. The LORD was the One that lifted his head when he was discouraged. When David remembered just who it was who was protecting him, he laid down and had a good night sleep.
Now, it seems to me that this Psalm sounds like David's solution to insomnia. He had trouble getting his mind to stop thinking about all the people who wanted to see him killed while replaying in his mind the things they said about him. Since the godly will be persecuted, this is something all God's children need to learn. Don't dwell on the opposition and their words. Rather, let's dwell on the greatness of God's promises.
At that point in his life, David could look back on the numerous incidences that proved God's faithfulness to deliver him. He remembered the times that the LORD was his glory. When he had been discouraged in the past, it was the loving hand of the LORD that lifted his downcast head.
Now it is your turn. Are you dwelling on the faultfinder's words and what they say or how they spread their lies about you which are designed for discouragement?
Well then turn your eyes to Jesus and remember what great things He has done in your past. Has He previously delivered you from a hopeless situation? Has He been your glory? Has He lifted your head when it hung in defeat? Do you believe He can do it again?
Friends, before you head for dreamland each night, don't focus on what others have said, simply thank God for what He has said, and all the great things He has done for you. Then go ahead and sleep like a baby on those ever-comforting promises of His.
