Paul refused to rely on a righteousness of his own. He trusted instead in the "righteousness of God," meaning "the righteousness that comes from God." That is an imputed righteousness, one that is credited to us although we did not perform it. By faith in Jesus we receive that righteousness. It covers us like a garment, pure and white.
